In cooperation with the Kansas University Endowment Association, he established INTERX Research Corporation and served as its president and chairman of the board from 1972 to 1980, at which time it merged with Merck Sharp and Dohme Research Laboratories. He founded Oread Laboratories in 1983 and served as chairman until his death. Over the years the Higuchi family has made numerous gifts and contributions to the KU Endowment Association.

Research Achievement Awards
In 1981, Takeru and Aya Higuchi established a program to recognize research accomplishments of faculty at Kansas Board of Regents institutions. The four Research Achievement Awards are named for four individuals, Balfour S. Jeffrey, Olin K. Petefish, Dolph Simons and Irvin E. Youngberg, to honor them and to recognize their contributions to the KU research program. In describing these honorees, Professor Higuchi stated: "They gave themselves unselfishly for the betterment of the university and the state."
