Travel of Research Investigators to Potential Sponsors (TRIPS) to Washington, D.C.

Transportation to Washington, D.C. to Visit Funding Agencies

Chancellor Hemenway, Provost Lariviere and Interim Vice Provost Warren have made a firm commitment to grow and stimulate the research enterprise at KU. In support of this commitment, the Chancellor is making the university airplane available to researchers who can benefit from face-to-face meetings with funding officials in Washington, D.C. There is no charge to the researcher for these trips; the only requirement is that researchers must have a scheduled meeting with program officers to discuss the possibility of funding for a future sponsored project.

Dates for trips in the upcoming academic year are:

  • September 25, 2007
  • October 16, 2007
  • November 7, 2007
  • January 30-31*, 2008
  • March 26, 2008
  • May 1, 2008

* Please note that the January flight leaves on the 30th and returns on the 31st.

On each of these dates, the KU plane will leave the Lawrence airport at approximately 6:00 a.m. (CT), arriving in Washington between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. (ET). The return flight leaves that evening around 5:00 p.m. (ET) and arrives back in Lawrence at approximately 7:30 p.m. (CT). Each researcher is responsible for making his or her own meeting and transportation arrangements, including transit to and from the airport, and for any accompanying expenses while in Washington.

Space on each flight is limited and is open only to faculty or faculty-equivalent researchers actively seeking funding. If you are interested in reserving a seat on one of these flights, please contact Linda Crawford, assistant to Vice Provost Warren, as soon as possible (lcrawfor@ku.edu). If you are assigned a seat for one of these trips, it will be necessary for you to provide us with your email address, agency being visited in Washington, and your home telephone number so we are able to call you early on the morning of a scheduled trip in case a flight is cancelled due to bad weather or mechanical problems. Be assured that we will not give out your home number to anyone; we must have that information logged into our records before space on the plane can be reserved for you. We will send all passengers a detailed map with directions to the KU hangar at the Lawrence airport.

If you would like to receive electronic notification of future trips, please e-mail lcrawfor@ku.edu and ask that your name be placed on the e-mail distribution list.

The Center for Research (KUCR) has initiated another program to enable KU researchers to meet with funding officers. KUCR will pay for one trip a year per researcher to visit a sponsor. A maximum of $750 per trip is available. A Faculty/Staff Research Development Travel Fund form must be completed, returned to KUCR, and approved by Barbara Armbrister, Director of Research Administrative, before arrangements are finalized for such a trip. Please contact Michelle Ginavan at mginavan@ku.edu or 785-864-7688 for further information on this program.
