Facilities and Administrative (F&A) Costs Return Policy
The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies seeks to maintain and expand the university's research leadership role by enhancing the research enterprise. Building and maintaining the human and capital resources necessary to foster and conduct high quality research is an increasingly expensive and difficult task. To accomplish this task, and to catalyze future research endeavors, KU has implemented a policy on the return of F&A reimbursements, also known as indirect costs.
Ten percent (10%) of the F&A generated by the project will be returned to the principal investigator's college, school or research center/unit based on his/her appointment. If the investigator has appointments in more than one school, college, or research unit, then allocations will be made proportionately. For multiple investigator projects, the 10% F&A will be allocated among the principal investigator and co-investigators based on the credit allocation specified by the researchers.
If the project is assigned to a research center or other non-academic unit, then an additional 4% of the F&A will be returned to the assigned unit. If the assigned research unit is one of the centers listed below, it will receive 6% of the F&A. If no research center/unit is assigned, then the PI will receive 4% of the F&A.
- Center for Research on Learning
- Joyce and Elizabeth Hall Center for the Humanities
- Higuchi Biosciences Center
- Information and Telecommunication Technology Center
- Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies
- Biodiversity Research Center
