Updates on the Lawrence campus from the Vice Provost for Research — May 2007

Research and Graduate Studies to Merge July 1

Acting on the recommendations of a faculty and staff committee, University of Kansas Provost Richard Lariviere announced in April a new structure for graduate education and research at KU’s Lawrence campus.

Effective July 1, Jim Roberts, vice provost for research, will become vice provost for research and graduate studies. The move combines the existing Graduate School with the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, creating a new unit with a new mission.

Diana Carlin, dean of the Graduate School and International Programs, announced in March that she will step down from her position effective June 30. Carlin, who has served as dean since 1999, will take a yearlong dean-in-residence position with the Council of Graduate Schools in Washington, D.C., beginning in July.

“The pending vacancy made this an opportune time to assess the position and make decisions about how best to proceed,” said Lariviere. “I envision an opportunity to integrate two closely aligned university groups for a common purpose with a unified voice.”
