Welcome to the Research and Graduate Studies @ KU newsletter provided by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies. In the February issue:
Graduate competition and summit highlight research
The Graduate and Professional Association (GPA) is organizing two functions in March that demonstrate the contribution graduate student research has on the campus and the state of Kansas. A research competition and reception at KU is followed with a summit in the Kansas Capitol the next day.
"Responsible Scholarship" participants sought
What exactly does it mean to be a “responsible” member of the university community? The NIH Office of Research Integrity has developed a framework for the discussion of responsible conduct of research in the sciences, and faculty, grad students and post-docs are invited to apply.
NIH-funded research and 'Public Access' policy
NIH has implemented a revised policy on “Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH-Funded Research.” This formerly voluntary policy is now mandatory, and all NIH-funded researchers are affected by this change.
Flat federal funding leads to slight drop in research expenditures
Research activity at KU continued its strong performance in fiscal year 2007, but expenditures dropped slightly from the record levels of the prior year. Federally funded science and engineering research, the most closely watched indicator of research strength nationally, rose slightly at KU in 2007, to a record $115.7 million.
Undergraduate research journal compilation begins
KU will start compiling and publishing its first Journal of Undergraduate Research this spring. The journal will be published electronically online, and print copies will also be available for distribution. Primary authorship comes from KU undergrads.
Outstanding GTA nominations requested
The Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards Committee is now soliciting nominations for awards for outstanding GTAs, as well as nominations for the Distinguished Service Award. Recipients will be recognized at a ceremony in April and will also receive cash prizes.
Undergraduate Research Symposium returns in April
The 11th annual symposium will be held on April 12. The event allows students to bring their work to view and to synthesize their results for their mentors and peers. A banquet for students and their mentors follows the presentations.
Faculty review, student participates in thesis competition
Faculty members once again served on the Midwestern Associate of Graduate Schools’ Distinguished Master's Thesis committee, reviewing nominations for the competition. As well, a grad student represents KU with her thesis on the food web for fish in the Mississippi River.
KU Research Achievement Award to Rick Miller of Kansas Geological Survey
Rick Miller, an associate scientist and chief of the Exploration Services Section of the Kansas Geological Survey, received the second KU Research Achievement Award at the Research and Graduate Studies Convocation.
